I was tasked with creating and implementing a Warehouse Management System (WMS) to increase efficiency in the manufacturing of computer servers and panels. There was no WMS when I arrived. The one that Automation Werks had was stored on a server that crashed, and the previous WMS was lost. I met with all of the department heads to learn their processes. Once the department heads had met with me, I researched the best platform to fit their needs to keep track of inventory, allowing for an increased amount of efficiency and automation.

Goals & intended outcomes:

  1. Analysis and Identification of Policies and Procedures for current Shop Inventory.
  2. Meet with Division Managers/Stakeholders for procedural review of inventory consumption/replenishment procedures.
  3. Research of Inventory platforms and software-based solutions that will best fit based on feedback from stakeholders.
  4. Deployment- Hardware, software, and procedural deployment of Inventory Management System.
  5. Document Procedures for future employees.

Accomplishments during my work at Automation Werks:
I was able to implement the WMS to allow for better use of time for the Automation Werks team. Based on their input, I created an Excel document from scratch that syncs with all users in real time to help each team member know what Automation Werks has in their warehouse. I also observed the creation of new panels that are being implemented in various locations across the country, which will help the different businesses become more efficient. Overall, I learned about the importance of efficiency by acquiring new skills to save time.

Impact on my career, knowledge & teaching style:
Participating in the Externship impacted my career by showing me what I know and how to network with content experts to learn new things and find solutions to problems. I learned new approaches to solving problems by thinking outside the box.

Participating in the Externship enhanced my knowledge by introducing me to new skills and content that I had never spent much time learning or perfecting. By dedicating time to learn these new skills, I will be able to introduce students to concepts such as server panels, the importance of an organized business, and networking skills.

Participating in the Externship influenced my teaching style by exposing me to a variety of jobs in the STEM field and highlighting the numerous resources and businesses available. I will be able to share and showcase all the resources I have learned so that students can be better prepared to make informed decisions about their futures as they enter the workforce.
