This summer, I had the exciting opportunity to teach Idaho National Laboratory’s CyberPatriot and Nuclear Science camps for students in grades 1–12. The project challenged me to make complex topics—including cybersecurity, digital responsibility, nuclear energy, and scientific problem-solving—accessible and engaging for learners across a wide range of ages. The goal was not only to strengthen students’ technical knowledge, but also to build their confidence, curiosity, teamwork, and interest in future STEM careers.
During my time at the host site, I developed and delivered hands-on learning experiences that encouraged students to investigate problems, ask thoughtful questions, collaborate with peers, and apply new knowledge in meaningful ways. Students explored cybersecurity concepts, examined the science and applications of nuclear energy, and developed stronger critical-thinking skills. Watching learners move from uncertainty to excitement and confidence made the experience an adventure—and a tremendous success.
This opportunity expanded my understanding of STEM careers and reinforced the importance of connecting classroom learning to authentic, real-world challenges. It also strengthened my commitment to inquiry-based instruction, purposeful collaboration, and creating lessons that allow students to learn through discovery. I left the experience energized, professionally renewed, and even more committed to helping students see themselves as capable scientists, innovators, and problem-solvers.
