Alicia Bynum Externship at Idaho National Laboratory
The summer of 2023, I had the opportunity to work with young minds at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Stem camp. The topic was geared towards Physics. Each year the INL chooses a different topic to focus on with students. I learned a variety to ways to present hands on activities that allowed students to apply the science we are learning into the real world.
Over the 6 weeks, a group of teachers and Interns worked with over 450 students ranging from 1st to 5th grade. Each day students would rotate between 4 classes. Classes were STEM- based and engaging for the students to participate. Over the course of the program, we talked about galaxies, rotation of planets, light, and energy transfer. I was always surprised to learn the knowledge the students had on each topic.
I feel blessed to have the opportunity to create relationships with other educators from my area and build a connection with employees from the INL to offer new opportunities to students at my high school. The INL has a great intern program for high school students to work and experience in a science based work enviornment. We worked hard and played hard this summer!
