As a Computer Science teacher, I wasn’t sure how my skill set would be integrated with my host, but after some discussions and research, we decided that reorganizing their data into ArcGIS would provide an excellent platform to maintain and communicate data to the public and decision-makers. Having never used ArcGIS before presented a steep learning curve, but in the end, I was able to develop a series of data maps that communicated information about the state of rural health in Idaho and a workflow for maintaining them. Additionally, I was able to learn invaluable skills that I will translate into my classroom.
During the course of the summer, I set up my school as an ArcGIS host and I plan to use the platform to supplement the data analysis portion of the AP CS Principles curriculum.
