During my 200-hour placement at EZ Exteriors LLC, I was tasked with learning and evaluating the process of creating accurate roofing and siding takeoffs from 3D renderings. The primary goal of the project was twofold: to develop competency in the technical aspects of estimating exterior construction projects and to identify areas where the company’s training protocols could be improved for future employees. Throughout the experience, I gained hands-on knowledge in calculating and documenting the materials required for roofing and siding projects, including sidewall materials, soffit, fascia, rake, eave, belly band, linear footage, square footage, and other essential components. By carefully analyzing 3D renderings, I learned how to translate digital models into comprehensive material lists that could be used to generate accurate client bids and project estimates. This experience strengthened my understanding of the precision and attention to detail required in the construction industry, as even minor omissions can significantly affect project costs and outcomes. Professionally, the experience expanded my career knowledge by demonstrating the complex relationship between technology, estimation, and project management within the construction field. It also influenced my teaching style by reinforcing the importance of authentic, real-world applications of technical skills. As an educator, I can now provide students with concrete examples of how 3D modeling and rendering technologies are utilized beyond the classroom to solve practical problems, improve efficiency, and support decision-making in industry settings. Consequently, this experience enhanced both my industry expertise and my ability to connect classroom instruction to meaningful career pathways for students interested in construction and technology-related fields.
