Patsy Jackson at Rustic Roots Salon & SPA
When people think of STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—they often picture laboratories, robotics, or software development. But STEM is also woven into industries you might not expect, including the beauty and wellness world. As part of my externship, I was tasked with learning the process of a salon and spa. Beauty is backed by science, powered by technology, and strengthened by continuous learning. Every service provided reflects the innovation and precision that STEM brings to this profession.
Technology has transformed the salon and spa industry. Advanced skincare devices, digital consultation tools, online booking systems, and precision equipment all help provide a seamless, customized experience. By embracing new technology, we can better analyze client needs, improve service quality, and create more consistent results.
Math is part of the everyday work, even if it isn’t always visible. Whether measuring color formulas, calculating processing times, determining product ratios, or managing appointments and inventory, accuracy is essential.
Supporting STEM also means encouraging curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning. Recognizing that the next generation of innovators can come from any background and pursue careers in many different industries—including beauty and wellness. By showing how science and technology are integrated into salon and spa services, my hope is to inspire young people to explore both STEM education and creative careers where these skills make a meaningful difference.
A modern salon and spa is much more than a place for beauty treatments. It is a space where science, technology, creativity, and precision come together to help people look and feel their best. We are proud to support STEM by embracing innovation, investing in education, and demonstrating that scientific knowledge and creative talent work hand in hand. We remain committed to providing exceptional care while inspiring the next generation of thinkers, creators, and problem-solvers.
