This summer, I had the opportunity to complete an externship at a local salon and spa to gain a better understanding of the skills and knowledge needed in today’s workforce. My project involved observing the daily operations of the business, including customer service, scheduling, teamwork, sanitation practices, and communication. The goal was to learn how workplace skills connect to classroom learning and identify ways to prepare my students for future careers.

During my time at the host site, I observed how salon professionals use academic skills such as math, science, reading, and technology every day while also relying on professionalism, problem-solving, and collaboration to provide excellent service. This experience helped me recognize the importance of teaching not only academic content but also the essential soft skills employers value.

My externship broadened my understanding of career readiness and reinforced the importance of connecting classroom lessons to real-world applications. As a 6th grade teacher, I plan to incorporate more career exploration, hands-on learning, and opportunities for students to develop communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills. My goal is to help students see how the knowledge and habits they build in school will prepare them for success in any career they choose.
