Addie Ashton at Micron

As a College and Career Counselor, my goal is to help students connect their interests and strengths to real-world opportunities. This summer, I had the opportunity to participate in a Micron externship focused on STEM workforce development, university partnerships, and the semiconductor industry. The experience provided valuable insight into how education and industry work together to prepare the next generation of engineers, technicians, and technology professionals.
One of the most impactful parts of the experience was touring Micron’s fabrication facilities and cleanroom environments. Seeing semiconductor manufacturing in action highlighted the precision, teamwork, and problem-solving required to produce advanced technology. I also learned that the industry offers far more than traditional engineering roles, with opportunities in operations, maintenance, quality assurance, data analysis, and technical support. These experiences provided concrete examples that I can share with students as they consider future careers.
The externship also focused on workforce development and university partnerships. Through research and site visits, I explored how colleges and universities are creating semiconductor-aligned programs, certificates, and engineering pathways to meet industry demand. This work reinforced the importance of collaboration between K–12 schools, higher education institutions, and employers to ensure students have accessible pathways into high-demand careers.
As part of the externship, I developed an Engineering Pathways resource designed to help high school students understand engineering disciplines, educational options, and career opportunities. The project aligned directly with my counseling role and supports Micron’s broader workforce development efforts by increasing awareness of STEM careers and the educational steps needed to pursue them.
The most important takeaway from this experience is that early exposure, clear educational pathways, and strong industry partnerships make a significant difference in student success. By bringing current industry knowledge into counseling conversations, I can better help students and families understand the opportunities available in STEM and engineering fields. The Micron externship strengthened my ability to connect education with workforce needs and reinforced the shared responsibility of educators and industry leaders in preparing students for meaningful and successful careers.
