As an elementary librarian, my primary goal for the Idaho OnRamp Externship was to explore how to extend the library media center’s reach beyond school walls, transforming it into a hub for real-world application. During the externship, I participated in technology-focused workshops and collaborated with local pillars, including the Nampa Library and the Idaho Botanical Gardens, to understand how to better bridge classroom resources with accessible, nature-based, and hands-on learning environments. I also engaged directly with families during community outreach events like National Night Out, which underscored that deep, neighborhood-level relationship-building is the true foundation of effective literacy instruction. This experience fundamentally shifted my teaching style; I have moved away from viewing the library as a static, contained space and toward a model of community-centered, inclusive, and tech-enabled engagement. I am returning to my students with not only new technical skills but a renewed commitment to building a library culture that supports our learners as both students and members of a vibrant, wider community.
