Expanding Career Pathways Through Idaho Vocational Rehabilitation

This summer, I participated in the Idaho STEM Action Center and Workforce Development Council Educator Externship Program with the Idaho Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (IDVR). IDVR helps individuals with disabilities prepare for employment, education, and independent living. My externship focused on learning how Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) support students and young adults as they explore careers and prepare for the workforce.

Throughout the externship, I learned about vocational rehabilitation services, agency operations, and partnerships that help participants achieve their career goals. I completed training, attended professional meetings, and observed participants building workplace readiness skills in a variety of community settings.

One of the most valuable experiences was visiting businesses and programs such as Paul Mitchell The School, Idaho Youth Ranch, Express Employment Professionals, Boise IDVR Reality Town, Dog Haus Academy, the CWI Micron Education and Summer CTE Bridge Program, and J-U-B Engineers. These experiences highlighted how employers, educators, and community organizations work together to help students gain confidence, develop employability skills, and explore career pathways.

I also contributed to the Pre-ETS Padlet Curriculum Work Group, where I helped organize digital resources and career-readiness materials for IDVR staff. This project strengthened my understanding of curriculum development and the resources available to support students with disabilities.

This externship expanded my knowledge of career pathways, workforce expectations, and the support systems that help individuals overcome barriers to employment. Most importantly, it provided real-world examples and community connections that I can bring back to my students. I look forward to using what I learned to create more meaningful career-connected learning experiences and help students see the connection between education and future career opportunities.
