I was tasked with facilitating cybersecurity camps for middle school camps and high school camps, as well as K-8 science camps focused on introducing basic understanding of atoms, nuclear power, and how reactors produce energy that power our communities. The objectives were very clear, in the cyber camps we helped students understand basic cybersecurity fundamentals and helped them compete in nation wide competitions using virtual machines to secure theoretical companies against malware and potential security risks.
in the atomic energy camps, we were tasked with helping younger students understand atoms, how elements are identified, how fusion and fission create energy, and what reactors are for, culminating in a fluid trip to INL to see concepts in practice.
I was able to help facilitate these camps in collaboration with skilled INL educators and other externs, learning different practices that will help me take STEM back into the classroom with tangible things to improve my teaching, including:
1. CYBERSECURITY programs and insight into careers and pathways that will help students develop the skills necessary to thrive, but also the opportunities to see careers that they may not know are out there
2. IMPROVED USE OF VIRTUAL MACHINES and knowledge of different OS security
3. A VARIETY OF great activities designed for different age groups to help students of all ages learn about building blocks of matter, different types of radiation, safety protocol, and how nuclear power is used to provide energy for our world in a safe and clean way.
I have had a great experience learning from great INL educators and other teachers from SE Idaho, everyone has been kind and willing to collaborate, I am taking with me a better understanding of careers in nuclear energy and cybersecurity, as well as a growing appreciation for different learning styles and teaching styles.
It has been a wonderful opportunity.
