I worked with Micron for this externship, specifically with the departments responsible for wafer processing. I got to shadow at least one member for every aspect of the process. With each person, I spent 4-12 hours learning what their job entails, what happens at their step in the process, and what skills are most important for their job. I also spent time with departments outside of manufacturing and worked with students at Micron’s chip camp. The goals for this externship were for me to understand the wafer manufacturing process, identify ways in which to incorporate the experience into my classroom, and learn what skills, knowledge, and traits students need in order to be successful in microelectronics manufacturing companies. I was able to compile a list of advice from Micron employees to high school students, design a wafer fabrication wet lab to use in my classroom, and begin planning for hosting a microelectronics camp. This experience has drastically improved my knowledge about the microelectronics ecosystem in Idaho and influenced me to add new microelectronics connections to my curricula.
